Five Lawn Care Tips to Increase Your Home’s Curb Appeal

If you’re planning to sell your home, chances are you’re busy decluttering, organizing and updating the inside to make it picture perfect. But since buyers first see the front of the house when viewing online photos and visiting, you’ll want to make a good first impression there, too.

Like a beautifully wrapped present, a front yard that is neat and welcoming will attract more people who’ll want to see the inside.

Whether your plans include selling your home or just getting your yard ready for summer fun, here are a few tips to do now to have it looking its best when warm weather arrives.

1. Remove Lawn Debris. Clear away leaves, twigs or debris that may have accumulated over the winter.

2. Fertilize: Apply a fertilizer that is formulated for spring to enrich the soil and help your lawn to grow faster, stronger and greener.

3. Apply Weed Control: Spreading a pre-emergent weed control in late spring and applying consistent applications to your lawn will gradually eliminate weeds and build resistance to them.

4. Trim and Prune: Remove dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs to promote overall plant health and create a more attractive appearance.

Here are a few tips for the best time to prune:

  • Summer blooming trees and shrubs should be pruned in early spring. (Examples: butterfly bush, rose of Sharon, crape myrtle, hibiscus, gardenia, rose, poplar, spruce, juniper, sumacs, arborvitae, juniper, holly and fruit trees such as apple).

  • Spring blooming trees and shrubs should be pruned after they finish blooming. (Examples: forsythia, lilac, azalea, rhododendron, mountain laurel, dogwood, birch, elm, walnut, and flowering cherry trees).

5. Mulch: Add a fresh layer of mulch around flower beds and trees to retain moisture, suppress weeds and give your yard a neat, polished look.

If you’re considering selling your home, I’ll be happy to provide you with tips on how to get your home looking good inside and outside. Alternatively, if you’re planning to buy a home, I can help you prepare so you’ll be ready to make a winning offer.

Best wishes for a happy April!

Say Goodbye to Mosquito Woes: Tips for a Mosquito-Free Home and Yard

As warmer months approach, so does the buzzing nuisance of mosquitoes. These pesky insects not only leave itchy bites but can also transmit diseases. However, with the right strategies, you can minimize their presence and enjoy your outdoor spaces to the fullest. In this blog post, I'll share some effective tips to help you lessen mosquitoes in and around your home during the upcoming months.

  1. Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so one of the most effective ways to reduce their population is to eliminate any sources of stagnant water around your home. Check for areas such as clogged gutters, flower pots, birdbaths, and discarded tires where water can accumulate. Regularly empty and clean these containers, and ensure that outdoor furniture and toys don't collect rainwater.

  2. Maintain Your Yard: A well-maintained yard not only enhances your home's curb appeal but also helps deter mosquitoes. Keep your lawn trimmed short and remove any overgrown vegetation where mosquitoes like to hide. Consider planting mosquito-repelling plants such as citronella, lavender, and marigolds in your garden beds to naturally ward off these pests.

  3. Use Mosquito Repellents: In areas where mosquitoes are particularly prevalent, using insect repellents can provide an extra layer of protection. Look for EPA-approved repellents containing ingredients like DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Apply repellent to exposed skin before heading outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

  4. Install Screens and Fans: Keep mosquitoes out of your home by installing screens on windows and doors. Make sure there are no holes or tears that mosquitoes can sneak through. Additionally, using fans on your porch or patio can help create a breeze that makes it difficult for mosquitoes to fly, reducing their presence in outdoor living areas.

  5. Consider Professional Treatment: For persistent mosquito problems, consider hiring a professional pest control service that offers mosquito treatment programs. These services often involve the application of insecticides to target mosquito breeding sites and resting areas, significantly reducing their population around your home.

By following these tips, you can take proactive measures to lessen mosquitoes and create a more enjoyable outdoor environment for you and your family during the upcoming months. Remember to stay vigilant, especially after rainfall when mosquito populations tend to surge. With a combination of prevention methods and proper maintenance, you can reclaim your home and yard from these buzzing pests and enjoy a mosquito-free summer ahead.
